Connecting Busan’s central Jung-gu district to the rugged shores of Yeongdo Island, this is South Korea’s very first and only remaining bascule (draw) bridge. Built in 1934 during the Japanese colonial period, Yeongdo Bridge was an instant nationwide sensation. On its opening day, tens of thousands of people gathered from all across the country just to watch a giant road split in half and rise into the sky to let massive cargo ships pass underneath.
However, the bridge earned its sacred place in Korean history during the tragic Korean War in the 1950s. When millions of war refugees fled to the temporary wartime capital of Busan with absolutely nothing, families frequently became separated in the chaos.
The Meeting Point of Hope
Because the drawbridge was the most famous landmark in the entire country, desperate family members whispered a final, solemn promise before running for their lives: "If we get separated, survive at all costs, and let's meet at the Yeongdo Bridge."
For years, the banks beneath the bridge were packed with thousands of weeping refugees staring at the sky, hanging missing-persons flyers, and desperately searching the crowds for their lost parents, children, and spouses. Standing on this bridge today is a deeply moving experience that connects you directly to the emotional resilience of modern Korea.
The Main Event: The 15-Minute Bridge-Lifting Show
Although the lifting mechanism was halted for decades due to heavy city traffic, the city fully restored this beautiful ritual to honor its heritage.
Once a week, sirens begin to blare across the harbor, and traffic lights turn red. All cars and pedestrians come to a complete standstill on the bustling boulevard. Then, with a deep mechanical roar, one massive 31-meter segment of the upper deck slowly rises to a dramatic 55-degree angle, pointing straight toward the clouds!

- The Seagull Murals: As the massive asphalt road rises into the sky, look closely at the underbelly of the lifted bridge. The city has beautifully painted giant, soaring white seagulls across the blue framework. As the bridge rises, the seagulls look exactly like they are flying straight out of the concrete into the ocean wind!
- Yurari Plaza (유라리광장): This is the absolute premier, designated public viewing square located right beneath the Jung-gu side of the bridge. Standing by the stone railings of the promenade gives you the perfect, unobstructed wide-angle photo view of the lifted bridge, the deep blue harbor, and the massive cargo ships floating in the distance.
- The Refugee Statues: While waiting for the show at Yurari Plaza, look for the moving bronze statue of a refugee family looking up at the bridge with hopeful eyes. It is the perfect place to pause and contemplate the deep history beneath your feet.
Important: 2026 Bridge-Lifting Schedule & Tips
- Summer Season (July–August 2026): To beat the intense summer heat, the city operates a special Night Bridge-Lifting Event. The show takes place every Saturday night from 8:00 PM to 8:15 PM. Watching the bridge rise while glowing under dramatic evening spotlights against the dark ocean is incredibly romantic!
- Autumn & Year-Round Season (September onwards): The regular Daytime Bridge-Lifting Event resumes every Saturday afternoon from 2:00 PM to 2:15 PM.
- How to Get There: Take Busan Subway Line 1 to Nampo Station. Head out through Exit 6 or 8, walk straight toward the ocean for about 2 minutes, and you will step directly onto Yurari Plaza and the entrance of the bridge immediately!
- Combine with Lotte Department Store: The bridge sits directly next to the massive Lotte Department Store Gwangbok branch. Head up to their free rooftop observation deck before the show to get a breathtaking, bird's-eye panoramic view of the entire drawbridge show from high above the city!
