While Seoul is famous for its "Five Grand Palaces," Hwaseong Haenggung is a completely different kind of royal treasure. It is a Haenggung—a temporary palace where the King and the royal family would stay when traveling outside the capital. Among all the temporary palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty, this is the absolute largest, most majestic, and beautifully designed complex in South Korea. Built in 1789 by King Jeongjo, Hwaseong Haenggung wasn't just built for politics; it was built out of deep, profound love.
The King built this stunning palace as a central base to visit his late father’s tomb nearby. Most famously, in 1795, King Jeongjo hosted a massive, legendary 8-day festival inside this very courtyard to celebrate the 60th birthday of his beloved mother, Lady Hyegyeonggung Hong.

  • How to Get There: Located right in the center of the fortress, it is impossible to miss. From Suwon Station, any local bus heading to Haenggung-dong or Janganmun Gate will stop right in front of the massive Hwaseong Haenggung Plaza.
  • Check the Front Gate: If you visit during a weekend morning or afternoon, make sure to catch the traditional Royal Guard Changing Ceremony or the high-energy traditional martial arts performances held right outside the front gates!
