Often called the "Machu Picchu of Busan" or the "Santorini of Korea," this village is a breathtaking labyrinth of pastel-colored houses, terraced stairs, and whimsical street art. 🎨 From Refugee Shelter to an Open-Air Art Gallery
Gamcheon's history holds a powerful secret. In the 1950s, during the Korean War, thousands of war refugees fled to Busan—the country's temporary wartime capital. Having nowhere else to go, they built thousands of tiny, makeshift shacks layered closely along the steep slopes of Mount Cheonmasan.
For decades, it remained a poor, forgotten hillside neighborhood. However, in 2009, the community came together with local artists for the "Village Art Project." They repainted the houses in beautiful pastel shades, transformed the empty alleys into open-air modern art installations, and turned the neighborhood into the creative cultural sanctuary we see today. - The Little Prince and the Fox (어린왕자): This is the absolute crown jewel photo spot of Gamcheon! You will find a charming statue of Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince and his fox sitting quietly on top of a concrete wall, staring out over the sprawling, pastel-colored village and the distant blue harbor. Bitna's Tip: There is almost always a queue to take a photo next to him, so try to arrive early in the morning!
- The Grandpas Fish Mural: Walk near the village entrance to see a massive, vibrant wooden collage shaped like a giant fish swimming through the alley. It is cleverly made from hundreds of tiny, individually hand-painted wooden fish panels pointing the way forward.
- The Stairway to Stars: This is a steep public staircase with 148 concrete steps. It earned its poetic name because residents carrying heavy loads up the stairs would often feel so dizzy that stars would literally dance before their eyes.

Because the village is built on a steep hill, the local cafes offer some of the most spectacular, unobstructed views in all of Busan.

- How to Get There: Take Busan Subway Line 1 to Toseong Station. Head out through Exit 6, turn right at the corner, and look for the small green local town bus stop right in front of the Pusan National University Hospital. Hop onto Local Bus Saha 1-1, Seogu 2, or Seogu 2-2, which will take you on a thrilling, winding ride straight up the mountain to the village entrance gates!
- Buy the Stamp Map: Drop by the tourist information center at the entrance and purchase a printed village map for just 2,000 KRW (less than $2 USD). It includes a fun stamp tour trail that leads you to hidden alleys, and once you collect all the stamps, you receive two beautiful, complimentary postcards of the village!
- Respect the Locals: Remember that Gamcheon is not a theme park—it is a real residential neighborhood where elderly locals live. Make sure to stick to the designated tourist paths, avoid looking directly into open windows, and keep your voices low.
