Literally meaning "South of the River," Gangnam became a global household name thanks to PSY’s viral hit song Gangnam Style. 
But there is so much more to this neighborhood than just catchy pop music. 
Gangnam is Seoul’s fast-paced, neon-lit economic hub, packed with luxury shopping, cutting-edge technology, and a surprisingly peaceful touch of ancient history.

📸 Say Cheese at the Gangnam Style Statue
You cannot visit this area without paying tribute to the song that put it on the global map! Head straight to the front of the massive COEX Mall to find the iconic "Gangnam Style" Statue.
This giant, bronze monument features two massive hands overlapped in the legendary "horse-riding dance" pose. Step onto the small platform beneath the hands, and the catchy song will automatically start playing! It is the ultimate, fun photo-spot for international travelers looking to check a major item off their Seoul bucket list.
📚 Get Lost in the Starfield Library
Located right inside the underground COEX Mall is the Starfield Library (별마당도서관), one of the most Instagram-famous locations in South Korea.
This is not your quiet, traditional neighborhood library. It is a breathtaking, open-air cultural space featuring towering, 13-meter-tall (43 feet) wooden bookshelves that stretch all the way up to a beautiful glass ceiling.   • The Fashion: This area is Korea’s equivalent to Beverly Hills or Rodeo Drive. It is lined with futuristic flagship stores of global luxury brands and high-end Korean designer boutiques, making it the best place for premium window shopping and celebrity-spotting.
🛕 The Unexpected Oasis: Bongeunsa Temple
The absolute best part about Gangnam is its beautiful contrast. Just across the street from the futuristic COEX Mall lies Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사), a peaceful Buddhist oasis founded all the way back in the year 794.
Stepping inside the temple gates instantly silences the roar of Gangnam’s heavy traffic. You can walk through quiet courtyard gardens filled with traditional lanterns, listen to the gentle chanting of monks, and look up at a magnificent 23-meter (75 feet) stone statue of Buddha—the tallest in Korea. Standing next to this ancient statue while seeing the sharp, modern glass skyscrapers of Gangnam towering in the background is a mind-blowing visual experience you cannot miss.

  • How to Get There: Gangnam is massive, but its heart is easily accessible via Subway Line 2. For the main shopping streets, head to Gangnam Station (Exit 10 or 11). For the Starfield Library and Bongeunsa Temple, take Line 9 to Bongeunsa Station (Exit 1 or 7).
  • Underground Shopping: If luxury prices on the street are too high, head beneath the asphalt! Gangnam Underground Shopping Center (located right inside Gangnam Station) is packed with hundreds of tiny stalls selling trendy Korean clothes, makeup, and phone cases for incredibly low prices.
