[Seoul Landmarks] Namsan Seoul Tower & Cable Car: A Romantic Journey Above the City Lights

Once you are done shopping and your hands are full of K-beauty bags, look up at the mountain standing right behind Myeong-dong. You will see a glowing needle piercing the sky. Today, we are taking the historic Namsan Cable Car to reach the crown jewel of the city’s skyline: Namsan Seoul Tower (N 서울타워)!

The adventure begins before you even board the cable car. From Myeong-dong, you can easily walk to the base station, and there is a hidden cinematic way to get there!
  • The Namsan Ormi (남산오르미): Walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 4 toward the Hoehyeon Intersection. Here, you’ll find a free, unique slanting outdoor elevator called Namsan Ormi. It glides up the hillside, giving you a beautiful glass-walled view of the city as it takes you straight to the Cable Car Boarding Station.
  • The Cable Car Ride: Operating since 1962, the Namsan Cable Car is a classic Seoul experience. The 3-minute ride glides over the lush forests of Namsan Mountain. As you ascend, the sprawling urban landscape of Seoul opens up beneath your feet.
🔒 Step 2: The Romantic Locks of Love (사랑의 자물쇠)
As you step off the cable car at the top of the mountain, you’ll be greeted by thousands of colorful padlocks clipped to the deck railings.
This is the famous Love Locks area. Couples from all over the world come here to write their names on a padlock, lock it to the fence, and throw away the key to symbolize eternal love. It’s a beautifully vibrant and colorful photo zone, featured in countless K-dramas and reality shows! Even if you are traveling solo, reading the heartfelt messages left by travelers from decades past is a lovely experience.

Standing 236 meters tall on top of a 243-meter mountain, Namsan Seoul Tower sits at the highest point in Seoul.

  • Skip the Weekend Lines: Because it is a legendary date spot, the cable car lines can be very long on Friday and Saturday evenings. Visiting on a weekday afternoon ensures a much smoother journey.
  • Dress warmly: Even in the summer, the mountaintop gets very breezy and significantly cooler than the streets of Myeong-dong below. Bringing a light jacket is always a smart idea!
